Additional Learning Needs at Cardiff High School
At Cardiff High School, we are committed to providing a welcoming, inclusive environment that supports all students, especially those with Additional Learning Needs (ALN). We work closely with parents, carers, and professionals to ensure every pupil can make progress and thrive. In addition, robust transition arrangements are in place to ensure that vital information about students is shared by colleagues in primary schools, in order to ensure a smooth start to their secondary school education.
Under the Welsh Government’s ALNET Act 2018, we use person-centred approaches to involve students and families in planning progress and transitions. When a student’s progress falls below expectations, even with high-quality teaching, differentiated instruction, routine interventions, and reasonable adjustments, these measures may not fully address their needs. In such cases, the student may be recognised as having Additional Learning Needs (ALN), and the school will take further or alternative steps to help ensure their progress. Our dedicated teams provide tailored support across the curriculum, including in-class assistance, small group or individual sessions for literacy, numeracy, speech and language, social skills, and life skills.
Miss Dolan, the Additional Learning Needs Coordinator (ALNCo), leads the coordination and strategic oversight of ALN provision across the school. Miss Dolan is supported by Ms Williams (Assistant ALNCo), Mr Frelford and Miss Lewis (Higher Level Teaching Assistants) and a team of LSAs. The ALN department liaises closely with all teachers and support staff across the school to ensure that they are equipped with the knowledge and strategies required to meet the individual needs of students with ALN. Assessment of students’ progress and needs guides the provision of extra support or adjustments, ensuring every student has equitable access to education. The department also provides safe, engaging spaces and extracurricular activities to support social and life skills development.
Together, we aim to deliver a fully inclusive education that respects individual needs and places students at the heart of all decisions.
